On a day many described as the queen stage, the Cape Epic exceeded expectations and delivered a monumental day for the riders. On paper, the 123km stage did not rattle anyone before the start, but once riders hit the Gantouw portage, the wind picked up and delivered a new challenge to pros and amateurs alike.

The winning team crossed the line in a time of 05.17:04 with the Toyota Specialized narrowly missing out on the stage win, finishing 2nd in a sprint for the line. After a tough day on stage 1, Matt Beers was able to rally, and with his partner, Chris Blevins, they were able to animate the race among the leading teams on GC.

“Today was probably the hardest day I have ever had on a bike, but it was still a good one. We had some minor issues early on the ride, but with the help of Tristan Nortjé, we were able to get back in touch with the group. I was hurting on the run on the portage, and unlike anything, I have ever experienced. The legs came around after that for both Matt and I right before the group split, which set us up for the sprint at the finish.” – Chris Blevins

Team Toyota Specialized started the day in 7th position on general classification, but fought back to 3rd and showed grit and determination on the most challenging day of the race.

“We knew today would be the hardest stage of the Epic and we had to capitalize on gaining time on our rivals. I am feeling better, and hopefully, it only keeps on getting better from here,” said Beers.

The young guns of team Toyota Specialized 2 experienced a tough day on the trails after Cameron Mason suffered from stomach issues. The 19-year-old Scottish rider had to dig deep to finish the day’s stage. Tristan took charge of the situation and mentored his partner through the tough times to finish the stage and ultimately allow them to start stage 3 and continue their role in supporting Matt and Chris.

The third stage takes riders on a loop around the Greyton area and Riviersonderend mountains. With 101km of racing over 2250m of ascent, the stage is set for another exciting day of racing.
