Thank you to Kia SA for the test unit and thank you to IX Online Motoring and Autoworld for the opportunity to do a review.

Introduction: The name Kia means to “Rise from Asia.” Personally, I feel that Kia have risen to the competitive occasion and are producing incredible cars. Sales volumes have doubled over the past 15 years, from around 1.5 million units to about 3 million in 2023 and the quality on offer, coupled with the list of standard features is next level - The stunning 5th generation mid-size SUV, Sportage, is no exception and did not disappoint.

Engine: The ever so quiet 1.6 turbo diesel engine, delivers a welcome pairing of 100 kws and 320 Nms, where maximum power is obtained through the 2000 to 2250 range of revs. Although the zero to 100 km/h is stipulated as 11.4 seconds, it felt quicker and is somewhat punchy, yet seamless, through the 7-speed automatic transmission.

Drive/ Looks/ Economy: Specific drive modes include Eco, normal, sport and smart, with each setting with its own digital display colour setting. I liked the ergonomics of the dashboard set up, the plush interior feel and the decent size 591 Liter boot, was a pleasant surprise. The Sportage looks super modern with crisp lines and between the big and awesome front grille and the futuristic back, is a car that oozes the right combo of attitude and tenacity. I thoroughly enjoyed driving the Sportage, so took it for a road trip into the countryside of KZN’s gorgeous midlands – my quest was simple – how would it handle on the open road and would it be worthy of some scenic off the beaten track, gravel roads. I am pleased to say that this vehicle handled well on both surfaces and felt remarkably sturdy even on some of the corrugated untamed sections of District Road 509. Kia claims a combined economy of 6.5 Liters per 100 and other sources reckon a 5 Liter average can be obtained on the open road, giving you over a 1000 kms from the 54 Liter tank, before bringing out your South African rond to fill up. With the price of fuel as it is and our current economic climate looking a tad unpredictable, one will find more and more people looking for a vehicle that saves you money, while not compromising on safety, features and driving comfort. My combined average was 7.5 Liters, but I did put the Sportage through its paces, which is what I am supposed to do, especially when delayed for a braai and rugby by roadworks!

Standard features are a winner: Wireless phone charging pad, conveniently located below the dash, Blind spot collision warning, ABS, EBD, ESC, Hill Start, Trailer stability assist, downhill brake control, 6 air bags, leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear shifter, LED Headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, rear parking sensor/ camera, front park sensors, daytime running lights, 2 x memory function for drivers electrically adjustable seat and passenger seat electric too, Apple CarPlay / Android Auto / Bluetooth with voice recognition, front fog lights, 2x USB-C rear charging points, front USB charging points, Sync/ auto climate temperature control, curved 31.2 cm touchscreen infotainment screen side by side with the same size dashboard display, keyless entry with push button start/stop, heated front seats / heated steering wheel / heated rear seats and more.

In summary: If you are looking for a fantastic set of wheels that is going to get you to many places, in style and comfort, look no further than the Kia Sportage. If you are looking for value and curb appeal, then look seriously at this top draw, all-inclusive package mid-size SUV. Test drive one today and get that warm feeling that you get, when you know that you have done the right thing and turn that dream into reality!
