A More Localised Approach to Global Growth

4 May 2026, Auto China- Changan has taken another major step in its global expansion journey with the unveiling of its updated Vast Ocean Plan 2.0 at the Beijing Motor Show, marking a shift from simply entering international markets to building long-term, localised operations within them.

This evolution is particularly relevant for South Africa. Rather than operating as an export-led brand, Changan is now focused on embedding itself within key markets, strengthening local partnerships, improving service infrastructure and delivering products better suited to regional needs.

With overseas sales already reaching 637,000 units in 2025, up nearly 19% year-on-year, the brand’s continued global growth provides a strong foundation for its expanding presence in markets like South Africa.

Seven Strategic Upgrades to Strengthen the Customer Experience

At the core of Vast Ocean Plan 2.0 is a set of seven strategic upgrades designed to enhance Changan’s global competitiveness and deliver more meaningful value to customers.

These upgrades reflect a shift toward a more customer-focused and locally responsive business model. Technology development is increasingly centred on real-world usability, balancing efficiency, safety and intelligent functionality. At the same time, product development is moving toward a global-first approach, allowing for standardised platforms while still enabling regional adaptation.

The strategy also places strong emphasis on brand trust, expanded partnerships and continued investment in research, development and service capability. Importantly for South Africa, aftersales support is a key priority, with a focus on faster response times, improved parts availability and stronger dealer networks.

Together, these upgrades signal a brand that is not only growing globally, but actively working to improve the ownership experience in each market it serves.

Next-Generation Hybrid Technology Moves to the Forefront

Alongside its global strategy update, Changan introduced its latest BlueCore Hybrid technology, now applied to flagship models such as the fourth-generation Eado and the locally available CS75 Pro.

Built on the iDE-H deep-electrification architecture, the system is designed to deliver a balanced combination of fuel efficiency, performance and driving refinement. Advanced features such as ultra-high-pressure direct injection, intelligent energy management and high-efficiency electric drive systems - enable significant gains in fuel consumption and driving range.

For markets like South Africa, where fuel costs and range anxiety remain key considerations, this type of hybrid solution offers a practical bridge between traditional internal combustion engines and fully electric vehicles. It provides improved efficiency without compromising usability, making electrified mobility more accessible in everyday driving conditions.

The fourth-generation Eado BlueCore Hybrid has achieved a media-tested best of 1.6 L/100 km, a reported real-world user average of 3.8 L/100 km and an astonishing full-tank range of up to 1,500 km. Supported by nearly 1,500 core patents, BlueCore Hybrid has completed 20,000 hours of bench testing and two million kilometres of road trials, including a 225 km/h high-speed tyre blowout test. Positioned in the SUV segment, the fourth-generation CS75 Pro BlueCore Hybrid will prioritise energy efficiency and intelligent configuration. With fuel consumption in the 3.0 L/100 km range, it also features a segment-exclusive CDC continuously variable damping suspension designed to improve ride comfort and driving stability.

Innovation Beyond Passenger Vehicles

Changan also showcased its continued investment in future mobility solutions, including the introduction of its Robovan unmanned logistics vehicle.

Designed for last-mile delivery, the Robovan integrates advanced autonomous systems with multiple safety redundancies, highlighting the Group’s broader ambition to play a role not only in passenger mobility, but also in commercial and logistics ecosystems.

While still an emerging technology, developments like this point to a future where intelligent mobility solutions extend beyond the vehicle itself, creating new efficiencies across industries.

What This Means for South Africa

The launch of Vast Ocean Plan 2.0 reinforces Changan’s long-term intent to grow and invest in South Africa as part of its broader global strategy.

For local customers, this translates into more than just new vehicles. It signals access to globally developed products that are increasingly tailored to local conditions, supported by stronger aftersales infrastructure and a brand that is committed to building trust over time.

As hybrid and electrified technologies continue to gain traction locally, Changan’s focus on efficiency, reliability and real-world usability positions it well to meet the needs of South African drivers navigating a changing automotive landscape.

Building Toward a Stronger Global and Local Future

With Vast Ocean Plan 2.0, Changan is entering a new phase of global development, one defined by deeper localisation, stronger operational capability, and a clear focus on long-term value creation.

For South Africa, this represents a brand that is not only expanding its global footprint, but doing so with a clear intention to deliver meaningful, relevant, and sustainable mobility solutions in the local market.
